In June 2021, a consensus was reached to upgrade the Bitcoin network with an update called Taproot. The activation of Taproot marked a significant milestone for Bitcoin, as it was the first major update since the introduction of SegWit in 2017. Previous updates were…not so great. They ended up creating different variants and forks of Bitcoin, that still exist today. The Bitcoin community eagerly anticipated the event, as it promised to enhance the efficiency, privacy, and capabilities of the network.
So what was the project? The idea was to integrate Taproot to the wallet on launch day. Being Taproot ready from the moment the network supported it.
